NAR Broker Involvement Program – Making a Difference

by Jim Barbagallo, REALTOR® on February 12, 2010

Strength “is” in numbers…. 1.2 million to be exact and WE need all of you! The NAR Broker Involvement Program is how the National Association of REALTORS® is making it easy for REALTORS® to make a difference in Washington D.C. We can create our own destiny and the NAR Broker Involvement Program is the easiest way to chart that course. The program gives the Principle Broker (or Managing Broker upon Principle Broker’s direction) a fast tool to communicate with their company’s agents regarding any and all important real estate legislative issues that come before Congress. Through the BIP Web portal at http://www.realtoractioncenter.com/realtors/brokers/ brokers can send a personalized message to each of their agents asking them to participate in a “Call to Action”. The NAR Broker Involvement Program writes and sends these messages only with broker approval.

Why and what is a “Call to Action”? Normally, it’s when 60,000-80,000 REALTOR® members—and you know who you are (out of 1.2 million) —write, call or e-mail their senators and congressman and give them their opinion on specific legislation that affects the real estate industry. Come on folks, that’s less than 7 percent of NAR’s 1.2 million members. If you were a senator or congressman in Washington would you listen? Maybe…Maybe not.

Yet, when the “Home Buyer Tax Credit” came up for renewal, all the REALTORS® that were sleeping under rocks realized something… Maybe by trying this “Call to Action” thing, somebody in Washington just might listen. Lets face it, this is so simple, even a “Caveman can do it!” So try it!

The number of REALTORS® that made a “Call to Action” for the passage and extension of a new “Homebuyer Tax Credit” was in excess of 550,000. Yes, Congress listened and it worked! Strength in numbers worked and it can work again and again.

Thanks to your “Call to Action” and effective lobbying by NAR lobbyists in Washington, D.C., the $8,000 tax credit was extended until April 30, 2010 and expanded to include an additional tax credit for current homeowners who have lived in their home for at least five years. Strength in numbers and the REALTORS® Call to Action worked!

With all that said do you really think the world will be forever a better place? Do you really think that the real estate industry and the U.S. economy will be back to normal by June 30, 2010? Dorothy, we’re not in Kansas anymore! Think REAL!!!

This is “Round 2” of a multi-round battle to keep the housing industry moving and a paycheck in your pocket! It is time to be part of the problem or part of the solution!! We need each others help!!!

The logic behind the NAR Broker Involvement Program makes sense. Real estate agents respect and listen to their broker owners and broker managers. They respect their opinion, knowledge and direction. Getting started is easy. Click this link to receive more information about the Broker Involvement Program. http://www.realtoractioncenter.com/realtors/brokers/.  I engaged others in my area by calling the brokers of the nine major offices at my board, the Rockford Area Association of REALTORS®. They all said yes and are now BIP members, 65% of the agents at the Rockford Area Association of REALTORS® are now connected through a broker conduit for all NAR “Calls to Action”.

To date 85 brokers in the state of Illinois are signed up for the Broker Involvement Program. Help us meet our goal of 1,000 brokers. One person can make a difference… its contagious! Your involvement will strengthen the REALTOR® impact in determining the outcomes of real estate related legislation by bringing a united and strong REALTORS® voice to all of the senators and congressman in Washington. Strength “is” in numbers…. 1.2 million to be exact and WE need all of you!
